The current version of Linux Format has an article on programming a hardware controller to interface to electronic circuitry. This is based using the Arduino available from pcb europe.
I've written an email to Linux Format all about it.
I've particularly enjoyed the 10 Great DIY Projects and Hardware hacking articles. I hope you are able to continue with similar articles in future. Linux is a great OS for these hobby activities. I particularly enjoyed the Hardware hacking article as it was a bit more in-depth than the DIY projects which were a bit brief.
I'd be interested in a project using Linux to communicate directly outside the PC. The Arduino appears to be capable of this but doesn't appear to have a Linux version of the serial proxy software.
